it’s a new year, and i’m starting it sharing a new art studio/practice & workshop space (exciting big/bright/lovely/accessible to Bostocamberville friends!) i hope to have zine/creative writing mentoring options available soon, and eventually mirror-virtual writing workshops. woo!

in other news, i’m going to be helping ‘VIDA: women in literary arts’ folks again this year at AWP Chicago. i was wondering if anyone out there in the ether was looking for a roomie/pleasant roomate and/or looking to book a room for the conference-week with someone. well, i’m on the hunt! let me know or rebroadcast as you see fit. i’m a polite/small/silly vaudevillian poetess (the universe works in quick/mysterious ways…)

happy writing/reading/dreaming and making wonderful mistakes, all. -jojo

Poeting & paintry pair, request-gift (concerning clowns and kittens, both or either!) for a donor of my *arts for Aliza’s brain trust project, inspired by Picasso’s “Clown and cup.”

Clown and Cup

A dustbowl has trapped a swallow—
eloped in watermelon cart
with a twister of absinthe.

Soles clacking, wooden clogs on the cat
man-handling a mandola
mauled in the corner.

A funnyman with enough elbow
bones to block out every feather
‘d hat. Grease paint melts on the lovers’

carved bureau-top waits
to initial, hiss Bon Nuit.
Train cars creak less than megalith.

A kitten ransoms a fly on the sill,
post-show bite of flea
under the long table. A lady’s veil

pressed to your exposed belly
button. This haiku belt cannot hold
diamond print after two pumpkin moons.

Why no fairy dens closer
to railroad veins? The circus moves on,
the hangover shows. The troop still

unmoving in greys by dawn
‘s fingerless gloves.
Center stage orgy of applause

-strewn belongings:
chess rook, monocle, shepherd’s crook,
garter, catnip, ribbons, cat gut, drawstring

bloomers, cat calls, snuff box, tea cup,
a fragile crop. Red kitten buries
something winged in sawdust—
a clown comes running in, noseless.
Small swallow, dustbowl upper lip.

Words i may (over)use.

In editing a new manuscript assortment (how motley motley from my MFA thesis, your poem-requests, and my poem-a-day project)— i realized i use some words truly frequently (at least in this collection):

champagne
skeletal
specter/spectre
ghoul
“red & black” (replaced one w. ‘coal ruby’)
spirals

The spiraling specter of champagne-skulled skeletal ghouls red red and blackening the champagne room with the carpet spirarling out of control vines with the ghouls serving yet more red champagne?
