X February 1, 2011. “Walter Sickert leads a band of musical misfits.” by Brett Milano, The Boston Phoenix

…At their Somerville headquarters last week, Sickert and crew were busy laying out plans for next Thursday’s show at T.T. the Bear’s. This typically involves a few levels of prep. Stage director Helena Prezio has already scoped out the place for ideas, and she’s about to call in the “bunnies” — the 20-odd performers who augment the group on stage; they’ll be instructed to listen to the set list and come up with something visually fitting. Guitarist Meff, who writes plays in her non-rock life, contributes conceptual bits. And Sickert is always ready with songs that have characters and storylines. “I think we present a healthy dose of everyone celebrating everyone, so nobody gets creeped out,” says Lazar. “It’s perversion with a smile…”

How it grew from two acoustic singers to a full-blown revue — or a “pornival,” as Lazar calls it — makes more sense when you add in that Sickert is also a visual artist (the fantasy-inspired line drawings on their CDs and posters are his), that Edrie ran an art collective in Cambridge, and that both had creative friends who wanted to get into the act. “When the numbers grew, it just became like a baby’s head growing,” says Sickert. “Our fontanelle just fell into shape…”

Up the servant stairs, skirting ghost blood
Stains on the guests’ scavenger hunt map: photograph
A band member eating quinoa, then howl

Along with the ambient spook
-y music keyboardist in the parlour with the meat
-less lasagna wafting in, high-five the undead

Prom queen (bride), make (non-swearing) nice in front
Of the family dressed as a hippie commune at the table
In the corner a duet of Diet Coke & rums tremble

Under the screeching speakers
The costume contest is judged
By the mike-cupping lion from Oz

In high heel paws (she grew up in Korea, so)
She thinks the ICP clown is a black and white Joker
i feel good about making the Mad Hatter

Uncomfortable, my mis-matched socks disturbed
Him more than his own, Pierrot polka dot holes
In the boat to oompah pah pah

Then sauceless sneak out past
Other cars’ skunk smoke pouring out the windows
Too bad harassing historical figures

Won’t get you any points, i manage to control
Myself from walking off with the tiny lanterns
And take pictures of Walter as the perfect pirate
