4 of my poems and accompanying storytelling/ankle-flashing/intricate bodice/awk-ville show photos are in the Kate Durbin & Becca Klaver curated SEAM RIPPER: Women on Textual & Sartorial Style.

*Introduction: Revenge of the slip dress sluts
*Seam Ripper, table of contents
X 4 Poems by jojo Lazar

i’m mis-matched Mary Janes honoured, thrilled with 2 cherry fascinators on top.

It will come as no surprise that ‘dress-up as a way of life,’ costume and maquillage as gender(queering) performance— and poetry about the intersection of all of these are dear to my heart. Included are my OG meta-burlesque poetess poem “HOT GIRL ON GIRL ACTION” and works about what happens when one’s histophile styles are misunderstood, and/or having way way way more fun than one ought once one’s ‘costume trunk’ days are supposed to be over. (Not so much for me, clearly.) i get to best a lot of my molting duckling demons writing about how i live and adorn myself these days. On with the poem/fashion/show!

Photos included are by myself/Vignette, Dr. Mom (of Salon Gone Wrong ‘08), David Aquilina (from lilypales Lilypad Tiny Instruments show w. Zoe Boekbinder & Jill Tracy), and Derek Kouyoumjian (Tinys at New Jew Revue fall ‘10)

Breaking TOys tiddly bits (plz help your broken minstrels out in 2 polls?)

[auto-reblog of mlle.tumblr self]

for the record, mine ye olde neologism of Pornival (n.): implies the Walter Sickert portable carnival of possible/likely pornographic intent. emphasis on the portability and carnal carnival aspect of our tiny instrumentalist selves, biensur.

X please write-in & vote for Walter Sickert as best Artist in the Phoenix’s Best of Poll (put Janaka Stucky or jojo lazar for best poet if you feel like it! and Meff as best lesbian/leather hangout? haha) :

The Sickerts in the papers!

X February 1, 2011. “Walter Sickert leads a band of musical misfits.” by Brett Milano, The Boston Phoenix

…At their Somerville headquarters last week, Sickert and crew were busy laying out plans for next Thursday’s show at T.T. the Bear’s. This typically involves a few levels of prep. Stage director Helena Prezio has already scoped out the place for ideas, and she’s about to call in the “bunnies” — the 20-odd performers who augment the group on stage; they’ll be instructed to listen to the set list and come up with something visually fitting. Guitarist Meff, who writes plays in her non-rock life, contributes conceptual bits. And Sickert is always ready with songs that have characters and storylines. “I think we present a healthy dose of everyone celebrating everyone, so nobody gets creeped out,” says Lazar. “It’s perversion with a smile…”

How it grew from two acoustic singers to a full-blown revue — or a “pornival,” as Lazar calls it — makes more sense when you add in that Sickert is also a visual artist (the fantasy-inspired line drawings on their CDs and posters are his), that Edrie ran an art collective in Cambridge, and that both had creative friends who wanted to get into the act. “When the numbers grew, it just became like a baby’s head growing,” says Sickert. “Our fontanelle just fell into shape

haha funny moments of the quotes i’m attributed. gosh, i think some of Walter’s and my remarks got smooshed together (i’m only responsible for the Sex Pistols part of the first quote, but i’m overall crazy grateful for t/his representation of us!!!)

X POLL ENDS TMW 2/2/11! “currently running in 4th place for this new music poll amongst many great regional acts! Top 3 places get prizes and features in the magazine which is great for any Independent band. If you are a fan of the band, please to 1 minute to show your support by voting. thanks!” via @kevincorzett

some nice presss about your burlesque poetesss

i got a lameo review which was hilarious, i can’t wait to use it in future schtick/webcast calls to army of broken toys-arms/poems/pr0n, etc. (a 1 sentencer, that said a lil’ of me goes a long way. DUH. i’m a loud five foot hobbit-muppet-fairy. something my parents, montessori school teachers, terrorized elementary school admins and ANY ONE who has had even 1 conversation with me in their lifetime could tell you) and btw, freaks and fantastiques? don’t let borings tell you to reign it in. this is how pants wearing regimes sneak in. (that is me re-quoting my twitter, i think it was true) sooo, have some press that actually tells you accurately how the audience reacted to me. swell!

Puppets populate world of the Brothers Grimm from the Tufts Daily by Michelle Beeler (exceprts below) » http://bit.ly/Grimmtufts

Right from the start, The Performance Lab proves its dedication to revealing a new, exciting theater scene — one that is already underway, but not entirely well known. The entire first act of the show, the “HUBbub,” is an unprecedented and completely separate performance from “Le Cabaret Grimm” and stands more as a precursor to the fictional cabaret than as a part of it.

The “HUBbub” is comprised of different acts from underground Boston artists and is a part of The Performance Lab’s mission to draw attention to Boston’s alternative art scene. Each week, the “HUBbub” highlights a different set of performances hosted by the gender-bending performance artist Johnny Blazes. Since the opening acts change from week to week, audiences have the option of returning to the theater for another performance — and a completely different experience.

For the first weekend, from April 8 to 10, guest performers included Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys, jojo The Burlesque Poetess and Madge of Honor…

The Burlesque Poetess was the best contribution to the “HUBbub.” With her quick wit and expert manipulation of words, she was a constant surprise of entertainment (as was her tendency to flash the audience)

(some reblog det’s from mlle.tumblr below, forgive me) - i was on the front/splash of ukulelia.com the other day. and that permalink included a great new review i’d yet to see. double yay.

…and the stand-up comic poetry of jojo, The Burlesque Poetess, whose Amelia Bedelia-meets-Lady Gaga fashion sense and skewed patter kept the house in stitches.

-EDGE Boston on Le Cabaret Grimm by Kilian Melloy » http://bit.ly/Grimmedge

though i make no claims to Amelia Bedelia or Lady Gaga fashion attempts, in my comment-defense i will say i was dressed as a pretty cracked out Alice-going down on the rabbit— i mean Alice nude before the looking glass, i mean. we’re Lewis Carrollian, as a band. it happens. we crashed fairy tale jail!

and in other facebrain news, come join the cult! i have my fan page url officially claimed. come join the temple of frilly verse and satin sonnets unraveling at your ankles: http://facebook.com/poetesss

p.s. oh yeah, i was in Huffington Post too for my work with WILLA: women in letters and literary arts. needless to say your tumblr friend doesn’t just write poems-on-demand, i’m up to a lot of not-good when i’m not writing dirty versery, i admit it. i have many irons in the fire? MPD teapots whistling muttering talking and singing to themself on the same stove range? yup. fire. away i go.
